New Repertory Theatre (Producer) Now entering its third decade, New Rep has established itself as a leading Boston theatre company that produces electrifying, compelling, and poignant productions. These plays reflect our world and community: they present images of many times and places and regularly explore ideas that have vital resonance with our lives--here and now. New Rep shows are provocative, intelligent, and entertaining.
Historically, New Rep's most successful productions have been plays of deep emotions and large ideas, plays in which the actors' work on an intimate stage brings the audience deeper into the play: Topdog/Underdog, Quills, No Niggers, No Jews, No Dogs, A Girl's War and, of course, the four biggest hits in the company's history: Into the Woods, The Threepenny Opera, Sweeney Todd, and Waiting for Godot.
Over the past ten years, New Rep has received eleven Elliot Norton Awards, including recognition for three productions at the 2005 Elliot Norton Awards:
- Adam Zahler, Outstanding Director, Small Theatre for Permanent Collection
- Benjamin Evett, Outstanding Actor, Small Theatre, for Permanent Collection and Quills
- Kent Gash, Outstanding Director, Large Theatre for Topdog/Underdog

The production was recognized with three 2004 Elliot Norton Awards: Rick Lombardo, Outstanding Director of a Musical, Small Theatre; Leigh Barrett, Outstanding Actress; and Outstanding Production of a Musical, Small Theatre. Sweeney Todd also received eleven Independent Reviewers of New England (IRNE) Awards including recognition in the small theatre, musical category for Best Director, Nancy E. Carroll for Best Actress, Leigh Barrett for Best Supporting Actress, and for Best Production of a Musical.
Since 1984, New Rep has produced forty-seven East Coast, New England, Boston, or World Premieres, including most recently the world premieres of Approaching Moomtaj: A Fairy Tale for Grownups by Michael Weller and A Girl’s War by Boston playwright Joyce Van Dyke. Other premieres include works by Athol Fugard, Suzan-Lori Parks, Dael Orlandersmith, and Doug Wright. New Rep is the Boston representative in the National New Play Network, an alliance of not-for-profit professional theatres that champion the development, production, and continued life of new plays for the American Theatre.
In addition to mainstage programming, educational programs like New Rep On Tour enrich over 12,000 area students' educations each school year, and the New Rep Studio offers professional theatre training and master classes for theatre professionals. Through mainstage productions and special programming, New Rep has defined itself as a major organization contributing to the arts and culture landscape of the greater Boston area.
